By thinking outside the box and not just searching for flights on a given date or routing, I can often find shorter and less costly routings, sometimes cutting an $8,000 fare in half. 

Even once I’ve ticketed a ticket, I continue to monitor fare drops so I can pass on the savings. That includes wait-listing sold-out low fares or, at times, reaching out to my airline rep to clear a lower fare.
