Leon grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa, fostering a deep love for the bush and safaris. He trained as a field guide and dedicated years to working at Mala Mala Game Reserve, where he also managed Kirkman’s Cottages. Betsy brings over 40 years of experience in the travel industry, now specializing in African safaris and luxury travel.
Together, they travel to dozens of lodges each year to ensure they find the perfect match for their clients’ needs. Their expertise shines in planning multigenerational family trips, where parents, college-age kids, and grandparents can enjoy private villas with butlers and dedicated safari vehicles tailored to their schedules.
They’ve orchestrated unforgettable experiences, from honeymooners soaring over Victoria Falls in a helicopter to sunrise hot air balloon rides over the Masai Mara. They’ve delighted families with young children having tea with giraffes at Giraffe Manor and organized destination weddings in the picturesque wine country near Cape Town, followed by thrilling safaris for large groups.

Amazing trip!
Working with Betsy was a fantastic experience. She is extremely knowledgeable, very thorough and responsive. She made the whole process very easy. It was my first time on a safari and it was a trip of a lifetime. The river safari in Botswana was awesome! So so many animals and saw all big five in Kapama. Everywhere we stayed was absolutely beautiful, would plan another safari through Betsy/Vogel Safari in a heartbeat!

BEST. TRIP. EVER.
We had the most memorable trip to South Africa. Every location visited exceeded our expectations. Our adventure began in Zimbabwe with a Sundowner Cruise on the Zambezi River. The next day Chobe National Park in Botswana for a cruise on the Chobe River and our very first game drive; where we saw lions, elephants, cape buffalo, giraffes, hippos and even sable (which is rare, I hear)! We also toured Victoria Falls. Then on to Cape Town! The coastline is gorgeous! We toured Cape of Good Hope, Boulders Beach (to see the penguins) and Table Mountain. We also visited Stellenbosch - loved! I cannot put into words the beauty of the wine country - must see. Best part of the trip was 5 days of game drives at Kapama River Lodge & Buffalo Camp - top notch! We saw the Big 5! I must say Betsy's attention to detail was superb. Her knowledge and experience made our trip effortless. We were able to enjoy our vacation and take in all the amazing things South Africa has to offer. Thank YOU!

Wonderful trip way beyond our expectations!!
Betsy helped with our trip from start to finish. Every detail was taken care of and we never had to worry about anything! We went to Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Kapama Game Reserve!!

Absolutely Incredible South Africa Safari Trip
Betsy worked closely with us to ensure that we understood our trip options, what costs were and were not included, what weather to expect and plan for during our trip, and that all aspects of the itinerary met our expectations, The trip included Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Victoria Falls, Chobe National Park in Botswana, and the Kapama Game Preserve near Krueger NP. It was just incredible and the accommodations and safari activities beyond our expectations.

Our South African adventure
Our host, Betsy Vogel from Vogel Travel and Safari went above and beyond for our South African Safari and adventures. We had guides with transportation waiting for us at the airport to take us to our destinations who were knowledgeable and very friendly. Betsy has been traveling to Africa for over 30 years and has experienced many different excursions to provide you with your ultimate experience. We felt safe and comfortable at all times. We felt we were well taken care of for the whole two and half weeks and if questions arouse she quickly responded to us. I would recommend Vogel Travel and Safaris. Leon Vogel, Betsy’s husband is from Johannesburg and was a safari ranger when they met. He is very knowledgeable annd adds his own expertise when on Safari and about SA.
