I enjoy booking a variety of Viking River cruises, especially the Rhine and Danube itineraries.

I loved my own experience sailing aboard Uniworld from Budapest to Passau. Crafting private shore excursions is one of my specialties. I personally escorted and procured a guide, rented a car and drove with 2 other couples to see the famous castle in the Medieval walled city Chesky Krumlov, in the South Bohemian region of the Czech Republic, one hour from Prague. We didn’t take the tour bus. Everyone was in awe.

My next river cruise on AMAWaterways is to Portugal and Spain, with wonderful tours included.

My favorite part of river cruising is how the ship docks and you are immediately part of the culture. I always ask the ship crew for restaurant and bar recommendations. My advice for families: don’t take your kids on a river cruise, but teenagers may enjoy it.
